A lot of the time when I tell people I am a Fashion merchandising major they automatically think that i am either designing clothes or trying to start my own business in fashion. So this weeks blog will be all about visual merchandising! Visual merchandising as defined by google is the practice in the retail industry of developing floor plans and three-dimensional displays in order to maximize sales. The purpose of such visual merchandising is to attract, engage, and motivate the customer towards making a purchase. Every store has either an in store visual merchandiser or a senior visual merchandiser that designs the lay out for every store.

Store layouts are changed very often with each season, so it is the visual merchandisers jobs to make eye catching displays that will drive sales and bring customers in. They also have to make sure the store is completely organized and request items that the store needs, so that the store is stocked. we have all been in a store that is completely unorganized or clothes are laid out everywhere, The in store visual merchandiser tries to avoid this for a more positive shopping experience.

This past summer i had the opportunity to work with a company’s visual merchandiser and be the visual merchandiser intern! I had a lot of fun displaying the store and driving sales over the summer. Visuals are a big part of the shopping experience. Its really fun to be creative with the sales floor layout to really draw people in. New York displays do that a lot!

In one of my visual merchandising classes we got to use a laser cutter. which is used to make the unique shapes and wordings in the actual window display. This way you can stick them on the window display and it holds up really good and adds to an eye catching display and a 3D look at times.

Another really big part of visual merchandising is an eye for detail ! This really gets customers engaged in the design, because they’ll have to stop and look and really process the design, which promotes sales! They will be more likely to go into the store and shop around.

It is my dream job to be a visual merchandiser because I have a really good eye for detail and love fashion. I also like putting different styles together that cater to everyone. This is a job in the design field that is very fun and creative that people don’t know much about. There is more jobs in fashion than just designing clothes, owning a store or just working regular retail! Don’t forget to like comment and subscribe to stay trendy chic with Dominique!
